What Makes It a Legitimate Travel Document
The Republic of Vanuatu is a member of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and issues passports that comply with ICAO Document 9303 — the international standard that governs machine-readable travel documents. A Vanuatu passport issued under the CBI programme is technically and legally identical to a passport issued to a natural-born Vanuatu citizen. It is:
- Issued by the Vanuatu Citizenship Office, a government body of the Republic of Vanuatu
- An ICAO-compliant biometric document with embedded RFID chip
- Machine-readable (optical MRZ zone + electronic chip)
- Accepted by immigration authorities worldwide as a valid travel document
- Renewable through standard Vanuatu passport renewal processes
Passport Document Features
Biometric chip
The Vanuatu passport contains an embedded chip storing the holder's biometric data: facial image, fingerprints, and personal data as encoded in the MRZ. The chip communicates via near-field RFID technology and can be read by e-gate systems and border control equipment at airports worldwide.
10-year validity
Adult Vanuatu passports are issued with 10-year validity. This is the standard validity period for most jurisdictions' passports. Children's passports are typically issued with 5-year validity. Renewals are processed through the Vanuatu Citizenship Office or authorised consulates.
E-gate access
Vanuatu passport holders can use automated border control (e-gates) at airports in countries where the Vanuatu passport is included in the eligible document roster. This currently includes Singapore Changi, Hong Kong International, and other major Asia-Pacific airports. E-gate access is granted by the host country, not automatically conferred by ICAO compliance alone.
Visa Access: What the Passport Opens
As of 2026, the Vanuatu passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to approximately 90 countries and territories. The strongest access profile is in:
- Asia-Pacific: Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia
- Latin America: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Mexico, and most of the region
- CIS: Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan and others
- Africa: Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius, Seychelles, and more
Not visa-free: EU Schengen Area (suspended 2022), UK (suspended 2023), USA, Canada, Australia. See the full passport uses guide or the visa-free country list.
Renewing and Replacing Your Vanuatu Passport
Passport renewals are handled through the Vanuatu Citizenship Office or via the nearest Vanuatu diplomatic mission. Standard renewal documentation is required (expiring passport, updated photographs, renewal fee). Processing time varies but is typically completed within a few weeks. Citizens who have relocated may renew through the Vanuatu consulate in their country of residence where one exists, or submit directly to Port Vila.
