Vanuatu vs Caribbean Citizenship by Investment (2026)

An honest side-by-side of the world's fastest, cheapest passport against the Caribbean programmes — cost, timeline, visa-free travel, Schengen, UK and tax. Updated after the EU and UK changes.

Vanuatu and the five Caribbean programmes (Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia) are the main fast-track, donation-based citizenship options in 2026. The trade-off is simple: Vanuatu wins on speed, cost and privacy; the Caribbean wins on travel — especially Europe and the UK.

  • A fully remote process, no interview or travel
  • A simple back-up passport and 0% tax on foreign income

🌴 Choose the Caribbean if you want…

  • Schengen / EU visa-free travel (with ETIAS)
  • UK visa-free access (St Kitts, Antigua, Grenada)
  • The strongest passport ranking (St Kitts ~155+ destinations)
  • China visa-free + a US E-2 route (Grenada only)
  • A long-established, well-recognised CBI brand

The travel gap, honestly

The biggest difference in 2026 is Europe and the UK. After the EU fully suspended Vanuatu's visa waiver (2023–2024) and the UK withdrew visa-free access, a Vanuatu passport now needs visas for both. Caribbean CBI passports still enter the Schengen Area visa-free (an ETIAS pre-authorisation will be required), and most — St Kitts & Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda and Grenada — keep UK visa-free access. Dominica lost UK access in July 2023 and St Lucia from 5 March 2026, so they sit between Vanuatu and the stronger Caribbean passports on UK travel.

If European or UK travel is your main reason for a second passport, a Caribbean programme — particularly St Kitts & Nevis or Grenada — is the better fit. If you want the quickest, most affordable and most private route to a legitimate second citizenship, Vanuatu remains compelling.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vanuatu or Caribbean citizenship better in 2026?
It depends on your priority. Vanuatu is the fastest (about two months) and cheapest (from $130,000) and is fully remote, but it no longer offers visa-free travel to the EU/Schengen or the UK. Caribbean programmes cost more and take longer, but their passports keep Schengen access (with ETIAS) and, for most, UK access.
Which passport gives visa-free access to Europe?
Caribbean CBI passports (Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia) retain Schengen visa-free access in 2026 — travellers will need an ETIAS pre-authorisation. A Vanuatu passport requires a Schengen visa.
Which Caribbean passports still have UK visa-free access?
St Kitts & Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda and Grenada remain UK visa-free. Dominica lost UK visa-free access in July 2023 and St Lucia from 5 March 2026.
Why choose Vanuatu if the Caribbean has more visa-free travel?
Speed, cost, privacy and simplicity. Vanuatu citizenship is typically granted in around two months, fully remotely, from $130,000, with 0% tax and no residence or interview. For clients who want a fast, affordable back-up passport rather than European travel, it is hard to beat.
Which programme has the lowest cost?
Vanuatu is the lowest overall at $130,000 for a single applicant. Among Caribbean options, Dominica is typically the most affordable, from around $200,000.
